Do you cook something for your family that you fee

Do you cook something for your family that you feel like you shouldn’t eat? I know how hard this can feel but no foods are off-limits to you. When you put food off-limits it creates a sense of restriction and instills guilt anytime you do end up eating said food. Try telling yourself this instead:

🥐 I am allowed to eat any food and I can work on learning to accept that all foods can fit and don’t hold moral value
🥐 I am struggling with my relationship with food but I am working on it.
🥐 take some of the food that you’re worried about and enjoy it mindfully.
🥐 ask yourself why you’re not allowed to eat what you’re cooking for your family. Is it some thing external telling you what to do? Something about the way the food makes you feel physically? Or is it just your brain telling you you shouldn’t do this?

Sometimes learning where these should thoughts come from can help you start to steer away from them.💛

But as you’re trying to do that, here’s what you can do when you’re away:
✴️Stand in the space you’re working with and take a moment to pause. Kitchens (to me) are magical places where food becomes meals, family time, memories and more.
✴️Bring your own knife and cutting board - this can give you piece of mind that you’ll have two essential tools
✴️Next, if you’re away from home on vacation or for work and won’t have all your normal spices, some meal planning can go a long way. That way you can pre make spice bags.
✴️Travel with a tool you’re comfortable with. For example, I recently traveled and brought my crockpot along. I made a recipe that required mostly canned goods to fresh items, and 1 pound of frozen beef. It was minimal prep work and we had a delicious chili by evening.
✴️ take the time to familiarize yourself with where things are in the kitchen. That way when you go to cook you’ll have a better idea of the tools that you have on hand.
✴️ keep the counters clear as much as possible. I find when we are traveling we tend to clutter up the counters and this can make cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen more stressful.

As a dietitian you might think all I do is talk to people about the FOOD on their plate and while that’s true to a certain extent, we talk a lot more about the other things on their plate. These things often are more impactful on our mood, schedule, time, stress, clarity, and our choices than simply what it is that we’re eating. It’s a bit of a cycle but here’s what can be a helpful exercise.

Draw your own plate and write down/brain dump across it. Write down all the things that come to mind that are filling your space and taking up your time whether physically or mentally. Circle the ones or one you feel you can start to influence or get help with and start there. We often can’t clear your entire plate but we can focus energy on the things that are able to be changed or tweaked.

Sometimes, this helps to reduce our stress which can make food choices slightly less stressful too. If you put schedule/time issues on your plate and circle it, ask yourself WHAT can I do? HOW can I do this? What might happen as a result?

Would you like to not feel guilty while on vacation? Episode 10 of the Intuitive Kitchen podcast is LIVE (link in bio🎙) It’s all about traveling and how to handle stepping away from diet-culture (i.e no guilt allowed in the luggage🙅🏼‍♀️) and how to approach your trip in a livable, doable, and FUN way.

One of my favorite tips is to spend some time meal planning for the day/week you get back. I cannot tell you how essential this is to my sanity! I just went to Chicago this weekend and when we got home I already had the grocery list done plus I knew what I was cooking the next day.

“Just eat more veggies” 🙄

I hate this advice and here’s why:
⚡️It assumes that someone has access to them (fresh, frozen, or canned)
⚡️It also assumes people know how to incorporate them into their meals in a sustainable way
⚡️It also assumes they know how to prep vegetables. I’ve taught lots of people how to do these cooking skills like chopping, slicing, roasting, etc.
⚡️It assumes people have access to education and the tools needed to cook vegetables

Catch my drift? Telling someone to just DO something leaves a lot of the gray area out and leaves you making a ton of assumptions. Try asking someone if that’s their goal? Do they know what more vegetables can do for them? How do they like to prepare vegetables?
